The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has issued a warning to tourists visiting the Mount Kelimutu area in Ende Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. Although thermal records show a decrease in water temperature at Crater II (Tiwu Ko'ofai Nuwamuri), volcanological authorities still request the public and visitors to maintain a safe distance from the crater's edge.
Based on the latest technical data as of July 4, 2026, the water temperature in Crater II dropped from 35 degrees Celsius to 33.2 degrees Celsius compared to monitoring in late June. Despite temperature fluctuations, the Geological Agency ensured that the lake water color remains consistently light green, and no surge in seismic activity or significant changes in the smoke column at the crater surface were detected.
Acting Head of the Geological Agency, Lana Saria, explained that Mount Kelimutu's status is currently still at Level I or Normal. Although volcanic activity tends to be stable, she emphasized the importance of early vigilance regarding the potential for phreatic eruptions that could occur suddenly without clear preliminary signs.
As a preventive measure, local government and the local Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) have been asked to strengthen coordination with the Mount Kelimutu Volcano Observation Post in Waturaka Village. This synergy is crucial to ensuring public safety at one of the flagship tourist destinations that consistently attracts both foreign and domestic tourists.
