The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) emphasized that mitigating fire risks at Landfills (TPA) can be carried out effectively through the application of targeted waste processing technology. Principal Researcher at BRIN's Research Center for Environmental and Clean Technology, Wahyu Purwanta, stated that there is no single solution that can be uniformly applied across all regions in Indonesia, given the differing waste characteristics and geographical conditions of each area.
Wahyu explained that the effectiveness of waste management heavily depends on the ability of local governments to tailor technology to real needs. Crucial variables that must be calculated include the scale of waste generation, available infrastructure, long-term financing capabilities, and the market potential of derived products from waste processing.
Furthermore, he underlined that the success of a waste processing program does not end with equipment procurement. Other vital components include qualified operator competence, disciplined operation and maintenance systems, and a clear residue handling flow. Through this systemic approach, the volume of waste accumulating in landfills can be significantly reduced, ultimately lowering the potential for fire incidents.
As a practical solution, Wahyu detailed that categorizing types of waste is the main key. Organic waste, for example, is recommended to be managed through composting, biodigesters, or bioconversion. Meanwhile, materials that still hold high economic value must be sorted from the start to be returned to the recycling economy chain, ensuring they do not burden landfill capacity.
