The Indonesian government has officially designated the strengthening of computing infrastructure as a strategic priority in an effort to enhance national competitiveness in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector. Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital, Nezar Patria, emphasized that reliance on foreign technology must be reduced by building large-scale independent computing capacity through the development of compute clusters.
During a national AI ecosystem acceleration meeting in Jakarta on Monday (06/07/2026), Nezar highlighted that modern AI requires a strong technical foundation. Without adequate computing infrastructure, domestic innovation and technological research will find it difficult to flourish. Therefore, the construction of compute clusters serves as the backbone for the birth of various AI-based solutions created by local talent.
Furthermore, Nezar stressed that this transformation is part of the Digital Indonesia Vision 2045. Its primary target is to realize inclusive technology while strengthening the country's digital sovereignty. He hopes Indonesia will not be trapped merely as a global market share, but will instead be able to occupy a strategic position in the global AI industry value chain.
To achieve this ambition, cross-sector collaboration is absolutely essential. The government encourages the involvement of academia, the private sector, state-owned enterprises (SOEs), and innovator communities to synergize. Indonesia is considered to have sufficiently strong assets, ranging from the availability of critical minerals to a promising demographic bonus, to win the technology competition that is increasingly influenced by global geopolitical dynamics.
