The world of extreme mountaineering is mourning the passing of the legend, Nirmal Purja. The body of the renowned British-Nepalese climber was recovered by rescue teams in the Broad Peak area of Pakistan on Sunday (8/2). The 43-year-old was reported dead after being hit by a massive avalanche in the Karakoram Mountains while leading an expedition.

The Alpine Club of Pakistan confirmed that Purja's body was found at an altitude of approximately 5,700 meters above sea level. During the evacuation operation, rescuers also found three other bodies in the adjacent area before they were eventually brought to Japan Camp. The avalanche claimed a total of ten lives, including three members of the Elite Expeditions team identified as Mallory Geis (United States), Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy (Oman), and Pur Bahadur Gurung (Nepal).

The sad news triggered a wave of condolences from around the world. Nepal's Prime Minister, Balendra Shah, expressed his deepest condolences over the loss of the climbers' lives. In addition, tributes to Purja's military dedication and outstanding achievements in the world of extreme adventure also came from Prince William and UK Defence Secretary, Wes Streeting. Meanwhile, Purja's older brother, Kamal, expressed his pride in the inspiring legacy left behind by his sibling.

Nirmal Purja, affectionately known as "Nimsdai", was a phenomenal figure who made history in 2019 by summiting the world's 14 highest peaks (above 8,000 meters) in just 189 days. This fantastic record shattered the previous record of seven years, an extraordinary achievement that was later immortalized in the popular Netflix documentary 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible. Before dedicating his life to mountaineering, Purja served for 16 years in the British Armed Forces, including 10 years in the special Gurkha forces.

This tragedy underscores once again the high risks faced by climbers in the Karakoram and Himalayan regions. According to data from the Himalayan Database, these high-altitude mountain regions are extremely vulnerable to threats such as storms, hypothermia, edema, and sudden avalanches, making it one of the deadliest terrains on Earth for extreme sports enthusiasts.
