Minister of Culture Fadli Zon spoke out regarding the negative narrative that recently marginalized the pilgrimage tradition at Gunung Kawi, Malang Regency, East Java. He emphasized that the practice of pilgrimage at the location should be seen as part of the mosaic of traditions and culture deeply rooted in the nation's history, rather than merely associated with mystical stigma or pesugihan.
In his statement in Jakarta, Monday (7/7/2026), Fadli emphasized the importance of the public understanding the diversity of local traditions within the appropriate social and historical context. For him, cultural practices still adhered to by the community are a reality of life that reflects the richness of the archipelago, as long as these activities do not violate the law, damage the environment, or disturb public order.
Fadli also highlighted the economic potential arising from this cultural preservation. According to him, well-managed pilgrimage activities can have a positive impact on the economic welfare of the community around the Gunung Kawi area. As long as it brings goodness and does not harm other parties, this activity is seen as a tangible contribution to the regional cultural tourism sector.
The Gunung Kawi Pesarean itself is actually a tomb complex of two respected historical figures, namely Eyang Djoego and Raden Mas Iman Soedjono. This area has long been a center of traditional activities, especially during the 1 Suro celebrations. At that moment, the community routinely holds a cultural parade and joint prayers as a form of respect for the ancestors, a tradition that persists across generations to this day.
