The slopes of Mount Merbabu in Warangan Hamlet, Magelang, were suddenly packed with thousands of spectators during the XXV Five Mountains Festival (FLG). Marking its silver jubilee, the celebration brought a distinct nuance, where the cultural parade no longer displayed lavish, abundant agricultural yields, but rather simple, unpretentious vegetable "gunungan" offerings.
The imperfection of these offerings, consisting only of mustard greens, eggplants, and cassava leaves, served as an honest reflection of challenging agricultural conditions. Artist and host Sih Agung Prasetyo referred to this phenomenon as a sign of bitter times, where people face an uncertain economic situation while still maintaining gratitude for whatever remains.
Carrying the contemplative theme "Makin Goblok Bareng" (Getting Foolish Together), the three-day festival served as a homecoming for the Five Mountains Community to its birthplace in 2001. Despite strict curation limiting the event to 85 art groups from various regions, the artists' enthusiasm peaked, proving the enduring appeal of traditions relevant to the broader public.
Behind the splendor of the grand main stage equipped with modern lighting lies the principle of self-reliance continuously upheld by this community. Unlike typical large-scale festivals, FLG XXV chose an independent path by foregoing corporate sponsorships and government funding, underscoring that artistic dignity does not always need to rely on external support.
This year's festival was not merely a performance showcase, but a statement of stance. Through a blend of art, tradition, and economic independence, the Five Mountains Community successfully proved that the essence of culture lies in nurturing grass-root honesty amidst changing times.
