The Gunung Kawi religious tourism area has once again drawn public attention after narratives regarding pesugihan rituals went viral across various social media platforms. Responding to the phenomenon, Minister of Culture Fadli Zon and the site management spoke out to clear public perceptions and emphasize the historical and cultural value surrounding the area.

Minister of Culture Fadli Zon stated that Gunung Kawi is an inseparable part of the rich traditions and cultural diversity long rooted in Indonesia. He considers it natural for the public to have diverse perspectives when interpreting historical sites or locations with high spiritual value.

Furthermore, Fadli emphasized that the existence of religious destinations like Gunung Kawi should be appreciated and preserved, as long as activities there bring a positive impact to the local economy. The main condition that must be met is that such activities do not damage the surrounding environment or existing public facilities.

Meanwhile, the management of Gunung Kawi religious tourism issued an official clarification via their social media accounts. They emphasized that Gunung Kawi has long been known as a place of pilgrimage, worship, and expressing gratitude to the Creator, rather than a site for pesugihan rituals as widely rumored online.

According to the management, long before the social media era, the area was already a primary destination for pilgrims from various regions. Visitors come not only to pray, but also to learn about the historical values and cultural acculturation well-preserved along the slopes of the mountain.
