A member of the Kuningan Regency Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) from the PDI Perjuangan faction, Rana Suparman, has expressed strong opposition to the planned construction of a toll road projected to cross the Mount Ciremai area. The rejection is based on deep concerns over the potential environmental damage in the region, which serves as an important ecological buffer zone.
This statement of opposition was delivered by Rana during a recent media discussion on the draft Revision of the Kuningan Regency Spatial Plan (RTRW). According to him, the local government must act carefully and wisely in spatial mapping so that massive infrastructure development does not sacrifice environmental preservation, which is the source of livelihood for residents.
Furthermore, the legislator, known for his deep concern for environmental preservation, proposed a more environmentally friendly zoning of the Kuningan region. He divided Kuningan into three main areas: the upstream region from Ciremai to Sindangagung as an industry-free producer of oxygen and water, the central region for local commercial centers, and the eastern region projected as an industrialization zone.
Rana emphasized that tourism development in the upstream area does not require toll road access, which instead risks triggering land conversion and ecological congestion. Rather than forcing a toll road through a water catchment area, he suggested that the highway route be diverted to the eastern region to connect regional industrial and trade activities more effectively.
