In an effort to accelerate the identification and return of fallen heroes, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology is now implementing cutting-edge genetic technology, namely Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) combined with SNP analysis. This step is an integral part of the "500-Day Campaign" launched by the local government ahead of the 80th anniversary of War Veterans Day in July 2027.
Vice President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Professor Chu Hoang Ha, explained that the use of NGS-SNP technology represents a major leap forward compared to conventional mitochondrial DNA methods. This technology is capable of analyzing thousands of genetic markers from bone samples severely degraded by age, soil, and humidity, which have historically been the main obstacles in forensic soldier identification.
Initial results at the Tra Linh Martyrs Cemetery demonstrated significant effectiveness. Of the 58 skeletal remains tested, DNA was successfully extracted from 93 percent, with an accuracy rate capable of tracing lineage back four to five generations. This success is not only a scientific achievement but also a beacon of hope for many families who have waited for decades for certainty regarding their family members.
Technical challenges in the field, such as poor sample conditions and a diminishing number of direct relatives, are being addressed by the expert team through the digitization of national databases and international collaboration, including with the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP). Big data algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI) are also being optimized to process genealogical data so that information matching can proceed more precisely and efficiently.
More than just an administrative task, this identification effort is viewed as a profound form of dedication to the homeland. Aiming to identify thousands of remains during the campaign, scientists continue to work on building a comprehensive gene bank as a tangible reflection of humanitarian values and the nation's gratitude to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
