The Communication, Informatics, Statistics and Coding Agency (Diskominfo) of Serang Regency has issued an official appeal to the public, especially those living on the coasts of Banten and Lampung, to increase vigilance against the spread of false information or hoaxes regarding the activity of Mount Anak Krakatau (GAK).
The Head of Serang Regency Diskominfo, Surtaman, revealed that anxiety had arisen among the public following the circulation of untrue news about a potential tsunami triggered by the volcano's volcanic activity. He emphasized that residents should remain calm and wise in filtering information before sharing it.
Currently, Mount Anak Krakatau is at Level III or Alert. Nevertheless, authorities emphasize that the situation on the ground remains under close supervision and is controlled. Referring to data from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), the pause phase of major eruptions has been ongoing since December 2023.
Although the tsunami rumor has been confirmed as a hoax, authorities still emphasize adherence to safety protocols. Tourists and residents are strictly prohibited from conducting activities or approaching the crater within a three-kilometer radius from the eruption center to ensure public safety.
The local government urges coastal residents to continue their daily activities normally. All parties are asked to monitor the developments of Mount Anak Krakatau's condition only through official channels of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and volcanology institutions to avoid misinformation.
