Winrock International has officially launched an industrial-scale empty fruit bunch (EFB) composting pilot project in Paser Regency, East Kalimantan. The initiative, running from late June to early July 2026, is part of the overarching WIPO GREEN Project, which aims to accelerate the adoption of green technologies in the national plantation sector.

Located in the Trubus Sentra Agrobisnis (TSA) area, the activity focused on in-depth observation of the biomass waste decomposition process. Experts and participants involved evaluated the biological and technical aspects of EFB processing to make it more efficient and highly valuable for the plantation environment.

To ensure the effectiveness of the method, Winrock International partnered with Dr. Nur Akbar Arofatullah, S.P., M.Biotech., Head of the Laboratory of the Department of Agricultural Microbiology at Gadjah Mada University (UGM). The involvement of this academic aims to provide crucial scientific input regarding the optimization of microorganism utilization to accelerate the composting process.

The use of microbiological technology in organic waste processing is considered to have great potential to increase land productivity while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Through synergy between science and field practice, it is hoped that palm biomass waste management in the future can become a more sustainable and environmentally friendly industrial model.
