Acts of violence and intimidation once again overshadow the journalism profession in fulfilling its social oversight function. Two cyber media journalists, MK from Kapol.id and NS from Global Satu, were reportedly victims of persecution and physical threats while attempting to seek confirmation regarding the alleged widespread distribution of untaxed cigarettes in the Subang Regency area.
The incident occurred while the media crew was gathering information in the field to verify alleged illegal cigarette trade practices that cause financial losses to the state. However, instead of obtaining answers, they were confronted with intimidating actions allegedly carried out by kingpins and several local thugs at the scene.
This action is viewed as a form of arrogance that harms the climate of press freedom and hinders public information transparency. The physical threats received by the journalists while carrying out their official journalistic duties have sparked strong reactions, given that the role of the press is protected by law in sharing facts with the broader public.
As of now, relevant authorities are expected to promptly follow up on the alleged intimidation report to ensure the safety of journalists on duty. Firm law enforcement against the perpetrators of intimidation is necessary so that the media's oversight role regarding illegal practices in society is not silenced by threats from certain parties.
