The Class IV Bakauheni Harbor Master and Port Authority Office (KSOP) has officially issued a safety advisory for all captains navigating the waters of the Sunda Strait. This measure was taken following the increased volcanic activity of Mount Anak Krakatau observed on Sunday (5/7/2026).
The Head of the Class IV Bakauheni KSOP, Suratno, emphasized that all ships are strictly prohibited from crossing or approaching within a five-kilometer radius of the volcano's active crater. This ban is enforced as a risk mitigation effort against potential volcanic material ejection and ashfall exposure that could endanger maritime safety.
Furthermore, Suratno urged captains to exercise extra caution when traversing the route. Given the unpredictable nature of volcanic behavior, preparedness for operational disruptions at sea remains a top priority to avoid unwanted incidents.
Despite the heightened activity of the volcano, Suratno assured that commercial crossing services on the Bakauheni-Merak route currently remain normal. His office will continue to monitor the latest updates from relevant authorities to ensure that maritime traffic safety is maintained for ferry service users.
