Mount Semeru, located in East Java, has once again shown an increase in volcanic activity. An eruption was reported on Friday (19/6/2026) at 00:44 WIB, with an ash column observed rising 700 meters above the peak, reaching 4,376 meters above sea level.
Based on data from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column was white to gray in color with moderate intensity, moving toward the southwest. This high eruption intensity has been recorded over the past week, during which Semeru experienced 47 eruption events.
As of this report, Mount Semeru's status remains at Level III (Alert). Seismic records for the period of June 19, 2026, from 18:00 to 23:59 WIB recorded quite intense seismic activity, including 11 eruption earthquakes, three rockfall earthquakes, and four emission earthquakes.
Relevant authorities have issued a strict warning for the public not to conduct any activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan, within a 13-kilometer radius from the eruption center. In addition, residents are urged to maintain a safe distance of 500 meters from the riverbanks along Besuk Kobokan to anticipate potential hot clouds and lahar flows.
For additional information, MAGMA Indonesia records show that Mount Semeru is the most active volcano in Indonesia throughout 2026. Out of a total of 2,793 volcanic eruptions in the country, Semeru dominated with a contribution of 1,298 eruptions.
