Mount Anak Krakatau (GAK), located in the waters of the Sunda Strait, showed an increase in volcanic activity again on Monday (6/7/2026). The volcano, which is currently at Level III or Alert status, was reported to spew a column of volcanic ash up to 150 meters above its crater peak.
According to an official report from the Mount Anak Krakatau Observation Post for the period of 12:00 to 18:00 WIB, visual observations showed that the volcano was generally clearly visible despite occasionally being covered by fog. Smoke emissions from the main crater were observed to be white with intensity varying from thin to thick.
In addition to visual activity, monitoring instruments recorded a significant surge in seismic activity. Officers recorded 24 harmonic earthquakes with durations varying between 27 and 1,058 seconds, as well as one distant tectonic earthquake with a duration of up to 1,400 seconds. Although seismic activity continues, water conditions around the volcano area were reported to be relatively calm.
In response to the latest developments, the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) maintains Mount Anak Krakatau's status at Alert level. Authorities emphasized the importance of adhering to the safe zone for the general public, fishermen, and tourists.
All parties are urged not to conduct any activities or approach the active crater within a three-kilometer radius. This preventive measure was taken to anticipate the potential danger of ejected volcanic materials and other threats that could occur at any time due to the volcano's unstable activity.
