Mount Semeru, located on the border of Malang and Lumajang Regencies, has once again shown a significant increase in volcanic activity. On Thursday (7/2/2026), the peak of the highest mountain on Java Island was observed sending out pyroclastic flows traveling up to 4,000 meters to the southeast.
In addition to pyroclastic flows, the observation post reported an explosive eruption spewing an ash column 1,500 meters high above the crater peak. The observed volcanic ash was grey with a fairly thick intensity, drifting toward the southeastern sector of the mountain.
An officer at the Mount Semeru Observation Post, Liswanto, emphasized that the volcano's activity status currently remains at Level 3 (Alert). Given the high potential hazard, authorities have issued a strict warning to all residents and hikers to refrain from any activity within a 13-kilometer radius of the eruption center.
Residents living along river basins originating from the peak of Semeru are urged to exercise extra caution regarding the potential threats of follow-up pyroclastic flows, lava flows, and cold lahar floods. This advisory serves as a vital preventive measure to minimize the risk of casualties amid the uncertain conditions of the volcano's activity.
