The increased intensity of Mount Merapi's activity over the past few days has triggered a preparedness response among residents living in the Disaster-Prone Area (KRB), particularly in Kemalang District, Klaten Regency. Although conditions on the ground remain stable and residents continue their daily routines, collective vigilance is being heightened as an early mitigation measure.
Subur, Coordinator of Tegalmulyo Village Volunteers, explained that so far, no significant impact from the increased activity, such as ashfall, has been observed in his area. This is due to the direction of lava flows and pyroclastic surges, which are predominantly heading toward the southwest sector, away from residential areas in Tegalmulyo.
As a precautionary measure, residents continue to monitor updates on the volcano's status through official information channels released by the Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center (BPPTKG) Yogyakarta and the Klaten BPBD. In addition to monitoring volcanic activity, volunteers are tightening surveillance along hiking trails, especially via the Sapuangin Post, to ensure no hikers attempt to cross into restricted zones.
On the other hand, Sukiman, Coordinator of Sidorejo Village Volunteers, highlighted the ongoing phenomenon of certain groups attempting to climb the mountain despite the heightened activity status. This is considered dangerous to safety and remains a serious concern for local residents responsible for maintaining security on the mountain slopes.
Chief Executive of the Klaten Regency BPBD, Syahruna, emphasized that based on the latest observations, the growth of the new lava dome is indeed directed toward the southwest. However, disaster authorities remain attentive to temperature increases at the old lava dome. His team continues to maintain full readiness to respond to any potential changes in status that may occur at any time.
