The athletics contingent of Tanjungpinang City put on a dazzling performance at the 10th Regional Student Sports Week (POPDA X) of Riau Islands Province in 2026, held in Karimun Regency. Based on the official recap as of Sunday (July 5, 2026), the squad from the provincial capital secured the overall championship title after accumulating a total of 23 medals, consisting of 12 gold, 6 silver, and 5 bronze.
Tanjungpinang's dominance on the track and field proved to be significant compared to other regions. Lingga Regency took second place with 15 medals, followed by Bintan Regency in third place with 13 medals, and Batam City in fourth place with 18 medals. Meanwhile, Natuna Regency and Karimun Regency had to settle for fifth and sixth positions, respectively.
Head of the Tanjungpinang City Youth and Sports Department, Ruly Friadi, expressed high appreciation for the achievement. He stated that this success was the fruit of consistent athlete training, high discipline, and great collaboration between the athletes and the coaching staff on the field, particularly Coach Dicky and Coach Yurnita, who accompanied the contingent throughout the matches.
Echoing these sentiments, the Mayor of Tanjungpinang, Lis Darmansyah, expressed his pride in the student-athletes' achievements. The City Government is fully committed to continuing its support for sports development so that these young talents can be better prepared to compete in higher-level events, such as the National Student Sports Week (POPNAS).
To date, a total of 72 medals have been distributed across various contingents, with the exception of the Anambas Islands Regency, which did not participate. Although the athletics discipline has concluded, the Tanjungpinang City contingent's fight continues as they pursue medals in other sports branches still underway at the Kepri POPDA X event.
