The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has officially denied the truth of a video that went viral on social media. The video was claimed to be a recent recording of the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau, located in the waters of the Sunda Strait.
In the video, which is less than a minute long, two people are seen recording the moment of a volcanic eruption accompanied by flashes of light from aboard a ship. The footage triggered widespread concern after being repeatedly shared on various digital platforms with a narrative that the event had just occurred.
Responding to this public anxiety, the Acting Head of the Geological Agency, Lana Saria, stated that her team had conducted an in-depth technical verification. The results of the investigation confirmed that the circulating visual recording is not documentation of the actual eruptive activity of Mount Anak Krakatau.
The Geological Agency urges the public to remain calm and only refer to official information released through the communication channels of the relevant authorities. This step is taken to prevent the further spread of disinformation regarding the status of volcanic activity in Indonesia.
