South Korean leading variety show content production house, TEO, has officially announced a strategic partnership with film distributor Waterhole Company. This collaboration marks the expansion of TEO, founded by renowned Producing Director (PD) Kim Tae-ho, into the film industry, combining non-scripted content expertise with feature film distribution.
The partnership includes theatrical distribution promotion, joint marketing campaigns, and the development of new business channels. TEO was previously widely known for popular entertainment programs such as Netflix's 'Devil's Plan', 'Physical: Asia', and 'Jigumamabul World Travel'. Meanwhile, Waterhole Company is an independent distributor that has successfully distributed global box office hits in South Korea, including 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' and 'Demon Slayer: Mugen Train'.
This collaborative step has garnered significant attention from film industry players. Megabox Head of Content Planning, Kim Joo-hong, called the partnership an unexpected and unique combination, particularly in seeing how TEO will package long-form narrative content. Echoing this sentiment, About Film CEO Kim Sung-hwan viewed the variety production house's involvement in the film distribution pipeline as a highly novel breakthrough that promises fresh synergy upon release.
Investors also responded positively. Representatives from Saehan Startup Investment and Michigan Venture Capital assessed TEO's decision to partner with a boutique distributor like Waterhole Company as a brand expansion strategy focused on curating audience tastes, rather than just formal business expansion. This move is seen as a creative solution amid domestic market saturation by targeting a loyal overseas content fanbase.
Co-CEOs of Waterhole Company, Joo Hyun and Choi Seung-ho, stated that this partnership was formed due to a shared vision in bridging unique content tastes with the general public. Chiming in, PD Kim Tae-ho reaffirmed his commitment that there are no boundaries to content creativity, and this collaboration serves as a platform to share their cinematic tastes with a wider audience.
The first collaborative project of this partnership is the release of the romantic thriller 'The Drama' by A24 studio, scheduled for release in September 2026. The film, starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, is projected to be a global blockbuster with a fantastic production value. Additionally, the upcoming collaboration lineup also includes the film 'Mother Mary' starring Anne Hathaway and the animated film 'Be With You'.
