The Governor of South Sumatra, Dr. H. Herman Deru, has given the green light to the planned basketball tournament titled the South Sumatra Governor's Cup. This commitment was conveyed directly when receiving an audience from the management of the Indonesian Basketball Association (Perbasi) of South Sumatra at Griya Agung on Friday, July 10, 2026.
During the meeting, Chairman of Perbasi South Sumatra, M. Hidayat, explained that this championship is designed as a strategic instrument to recruit talented young athletes while fostering public interest in basketball in Bumi Sriwijaya. Perbasi arrived with a major agenda to boost regional sports achievements through structured competition.
Responding to the initiative, Governor Herman Deru emphasized the importance of this event as a momentum for young athletes to hone their skills. According to him, regular and high-quality competitions are the main key to producing accomplished basketball players who can bring honor to South Sumatra, both nationally and internationally.
To ensure the success of the event, Herman Deru specifically instructed Perbasi to establish strategic collaborations with various parties, including the business sector. He suggested involving private companies and state-owned enterprises (SOEs), such as PT Bukit Asam, as main sponsors to elevate the quality and excitement of the tournament.
Synergy between the government, sports organizations, business players, and the media was a crucial point highlighted by the Governor. He hopes the Governor's Cup will not merely serve as a competition arena, but become a sustainable sports development ecosystem capable of increasing the public's passion for basketball.
