Rescue efforts for an 18-year-old hiker named Cakra are currently underway on the slopes of Mount Semeru. The victim reportedly fell into a ravine after hiking through an unofficial route in the Candi Jawar Purbakala area, Argoyuwono Village, Malang Regency.
Coordinator of the Malang Raya SAR Alert Unit, Imam Nahrowi, confirmed that the evacuation process currently faces major challenges. The rescue team must trek for eight hours on foot to reach the victim's location in a steep and rugged area.
Head of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Center (BBTNBTS), Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha, emphasized that the hike was illegal. Currently, climbing activities to the summit of Semeru remain completely closed given the volcano's "Alert" (Siaga) status and ongoing eruptive activity.
The incident began when the group of hikers from Semarang, Malang, and Pasuruan started their journey on Saturday (30/5/2026). Communication was briefly established on Monday (1/6/2026) when the victim sent coordinate points before finally losing contact. The family, upon receiving the news, immediately requested assistance from local authorities.
A joint team consisting of BBTNBTS officers, Basarnas, and local residents has been deployed to ensure the victim is immediately evacuated to a medical post. An ambulance and medical team have been stationed at the pickup point to provide first aid before the victim is referred to the nearest hospital.
