Volcanic activity at Mount Ibu, located in West Halmahera Regency, North Maluku, increased again on Friday (10/7/2026) afternoon. The volcano reportedly erupted, spewing a column of volcanic ash approximately 500 meters high above the peak at 16:39 WIT.
According to an official report from the Geological Agency via volcano observer M. Richard Chaniago, the observed ash column was gray in color with thick intensity and moved toward the north. Seismograph recordings noted that this eruption had a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters with a duration of 54 seconds.
In response to these conditions, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) immediately issued security protocols for local residents and tourists. All parties are strictly prohibited from engaging in activities within a 2-kilometer radius of the active crater. In addition, there is a sectoral danger zone extended up to 3.5 kilometers toward the northern crater opening.
The local government urges residents to remain vigilant against the potential threat of follow-up eruptions. People engaged in outdoor activities during ashfall are advised to wear masks and goggles to protect their respiratory tracts and eyes from exposure to volcanic materials.
