Volcanic activity at Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), has increased again. The volcano was reported to have erupted on Friday morning (24/7/2026) at around 06:39 WITA, spewing a thick ash column approximately 1,600 meters above the peak.
Based on the official report from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the Magma ESDM system, the observed volcanic ash column was gray with a thick intensity, drifting towards the north and northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 47.3 millimeters and a duration of approximately 2 minutes and 30 seconds.
Currently, the volcano's activity level is at Status Level III (Alert). In response to this situation, authorities have strongly urged local residents and tourists not to conduct any activities within a 5-kilometer danger radius from the center of the eruption.
In addition to the direct threat of eruptive material, residents living around river valleys originating from the peak of the mountain are also urged to watch out for potential rain-triggered lahar floods. This warning is specifically directed at vulnerable areas such as Dulipali, Padang Pasir, Nobo, Nurabelen, Klatanlo, Hokeng Jaya, Boru, and Nawakote in the event of high-intensity rain.
To anticipate adverse health effects, particularly on the respiratory system due to exposure to volcanic ash, residents are advised to wear masks or nose and mouth protection when outdoors. The local government has also urged the public to remain calm, follow official instructions, and not easily believe fake news circulating without reliable sources.
