The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Authority (BB TNBTS) has officially announced the temporary closure of the Mount Semeru hiking trail. This policy will be in effect for 12 days, from August 7 to August 18, 2026.
The decision was made out of deep respect for the tradition of Hari Raya Karo, which will be celebrated by the Tengger community in Ranupani Village, Senduro District, Lumajang. Head of BB TNBTS, Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha, explained that his office had received an official request from the Ranupani Village Government to maintain the sacredness of the traditional ritual.
According to instructions from the national park authority, the last hiking activity is permitted on August 6, 2026. All hikers are required to have descended and be at the Ranupani Post by 16:00 WIB on August 7, 2026, at the latest. The hiking trail is scheduled to resume normal operations starting August 19, 2026.
This closure aims to ensure safety, order, and the smooth execution of the traditional ceremony, which has been passed down through generations by the local community. Additionally, this step is expected to minimize potential disruptions between hiker mobility and the series of sacred ritual activities.
Although the hiking trail is closed, BB TNBTS emphasized that the tourist area and the Ranu Regulo campsite will remain open to the public. For hikers previously affected by rescheduling due to eruptions whose plans conflict with the Hari Raya Karo schedule, the management will provide technical solutions through direct coordination with group leaders via WhatsApp.
