Amid technological acceleration and the massive penetration of artificial intelligence (AI), higher education institutions are now faced with a major challenge to not only focus on digital modernization. The Rector of the 17 August 1945 University (Untag) Surabaya, Dr. Harjo Seputro, emphasized that the progress of educational institutions must remain rooted in integrity, ethics, and community service.
This message was delivered by Harjo after conducting a reflective visit to the Sunan Gunung Jati tomb complex in Cirebon, accompanied by the vice rectors. This visit served as a momentum to reinterpret the philosophy of leadership and education handed down by the historical figure in facing global challenges in 2026.
Harjo highlighted Sunan Gunung Jati's advice, Ingsun titip tajug lan fakir miskin, as a moral foundation for educational institutions. In the campus context, tajug is interpreted as a house of knowledge whose academic quality must be maintained, while fakir miskin serves as a reminder that institutions must always support social welfare through transparent and honest governance.
Furthermore, he stressed that AI is merely a supporting instrument that requires a strong moral foundation. Higher education institutions carry a moral responsibility to produce graduates who are not only technologically proficient, but also possess empathy and a strong national commitment.
Harjo also likened the campus to a port of knowledge, much like Cirebon in the past, which served as a meeting point for diverse cultures. He expressed hope that Untag Surabaya could remain open to international collaboration and global innovation without losing its deeply rooted national identity and character.
