Indonesia is known as the world's epicenter of volcanology thanks to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire path. With a population of over 130 active volcanoes, the potential threat of eruption is a reality that society has had to face throughout history. The question of which volcano is the most deadly often refers to two aspects: the scale of a single destructive eruption or the frequency of activity that continuously threatens populations.
Mount Tambora on Sumbawa Island to this day holds the historical record for the deadliest eruption in the world. The colossal eruption in April 1815 with a VEI 7 index not only devastated the surrounding region through pyroclastic flows and lahar, but also created a global climate impact known as the 'Year Without a Summer' in 1816. An estimated 71,000 to 92,000 lives were lost due to a combination of direct eruptions, crop failures, and accompanying epidemics.
On the other hand, Mount Krakatoa during its eruption in August 1883 became a symbol of volcanic power that triggered a devastating tsunami. This phenomenon claimed 36,417 lives, with a detonation sound recorded as the loudest sound in modern history. The destruction caused by tsunami waves along the coasts of Banten and Lampung made it one of the deadliest volcanic events ever recorded in the nation's collective memory.
Unlike Tambora or Krakatoa, which are phenomenal for their single eruptions, Mount Merapi in Central Java stands out as the most continuously active and dangerous volcano. With an extremely high frequency of eruptions and its location adjacent to densely populated areas, Merapi is internationally recognized as one of the 'Decade Volcanoes'. This geological proximity makes Merapi a constant threat to millions of nearby residents, demanding continuous mitigation vigilance.
