The case of the death of Dr. Eliza Priscila Utami Pakaenoni, affectionately known as Dr. Icha, in North Central Timor Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, has sparked deep concern regarding the safety of medical personnel in Indonesia. The Federation of Pharmaceutical and Health Workers' Unions of the Confederation of All Indonesian Trade Unions (FSP FARKES KSPI) emphasized that this incident serves as a stark warning about the vulnerability of healthcare workers who often face pressure and intimidation while on duty.
The President of FSP FARKES KSPI, Idris Idham, stated that any form of bullying, intimidation, or abuse of authority against medical personnel is unjustifiable and must not be tolerated under any circumstances. For him, the noble duty of doctors and healthcare workers as the front line of public service must be accompanied by guarantees of a safe, dignified, and fear-free working environment.
The public has put the spotlight on this case following allegations that the late Dr. Icha had faced pressure before she was found dead. In response, FSP FARKES KSPI urged law enforcement officials and authorities to conduct a transparent, objective, and accountable investigation. The legal enforcement process must be carried out indiscriminately to ensure justice for the deceased and her family.
In addition to law enforcement, the organization also urges the government to strengthen the protection system for healthcare workers by providing accessible reporting mechanisms, whistleblower protection, and psychological support for medical personnel experiencing work-related stress. The state is deemed to bear full responsibility for ensuring their mental and professional safety.
Furthermore, FSP FARKES KSPI also urged the reinforcement of more comprehensive labor regulations. Through legislative improvements, it is hoped that there will be stronger protection regarding Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) aspects and the certainty of normative rights for all medical workers, so that similar incidents do not recur in the future.
