A fatal traffic accident occurred in the Gunung Raya area, Tanah Bumbu Regency, South Kalimantan, involving a fuel tanker truck and a pickup truck. This tragic incident resulted in seven deaths at the scene, five of whom were university students participating in a community service program (Kuliah Kerja Nyata/KKN).
The incident began when the fuel tanker, license plate DA 8016 ZV, was traveling from Banjarbaru toward Batulicin. The truck allegedly lost control and collided with a pickup truck, license plate DA 8041 ZQ, belonging to Batulicin Irigasi Village, which was coming from the opposite direction. The pickup truck was reportedly transporting a group of students who planned to spend their holiday at the Sungai Alut tourist area.
Head of the Traffic Unit of the Tanah Bumbu Police, Police Commissioner Assistant (AKP) Eko Guntur, confirmed the heartbreaking incident. All victims were immediately evacuated to the Mantewe Community Health Center (Puskesmas) shortly after the collision. In addition to the seven fatalities, one critically injured victim, identified as M. Fahrizal Hasbi, a student at Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM), was immediately referred to Marina Hospital for intensive medical treatment. The police also confirmed that the bodies of the deceased victims have been handed over to their respective families for burial.
Responding to this tragedy, AKP Eko Guntur issued a stern warning to drivers who frequently travel the Batulicin–Banjarbaru shortcut. He emphasized that the route features extreme road conditions with many blind spots, sharp turns, and steep inclines. Drivers are urged to remain focused, reduce speed, and always prioritize safety during their journey.
