The Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora) is currently finalizing a standardized calculation scheme to measure the economic impact generated by various sporting events in Indonesia. This step is being taken as part of the government's efforts to precisely map the sports sector's contribution to the national economy.
Minister of Youth and Sports, Erick Thohir, emphasized that so far, data regarding the economic value of sporting events has not been well-structured. Although activities like MotoGP in Mandalika or marathon events in various regions have proven capable of boosting local economies, in-depth calculations regarding cost structures and their real impact still require comprehensive data validation.
For illustration, the MotoGP race in Mandalika is known to generate an economic impact of up to IDR 4.9 trillion, despite operational expenses reaching IDR 600 billion. Similarly, marathon events involving thousands of participants directly create a domino effect on the hospitality, culinary, and transportation sectors in host cities.
Going forward, the Ministry of Youth and Sports no longer wants to view the development of the sports sector solely from the perspective of athletic achievement. The Minister emphasized a paradigm shift toward an investment approach, where the sports industry and sports-based tourism (sport tourism) are positioned as potential pillars of state revenue.
Through this new calculation system, the government hopes to provide a more solid policy reference in supporting the growth of the national sports industry in the future.
