Commission XIII of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPR RI) expressed high appreciation to PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) for its commitment to running business governance that upholds the principles of Human Rights (HAM). This positive assessment was conveyed directly by the Deputy Chairman of Commission XIII of the DPR RI, Sugiat Santoso, after leading a recess working visit to PTFI's operational area in Tembagapura, Mimika Regency, Central Papua, on Friday (24/7/2026).
The working visit was conducted to carry out the legislative oversight function regarding the implementation of the Business and Human Rights (BHR) concept in the national industrial sector. During the review, the Commission XIII team observed various crucial aspects, including the protection of workers' rights, environmental sustainability management, as well as empowerment programs and social contributions for the community around the mining area.
Sugiat assessed that PTFI has successfully integrated human rights compliance into its operational chain. He emphasized that the employee welfare standards provided by the company, along with the commitment to mitigating environmental impacts and social responsibility programs, have met the ideal parameters of applicable human rights regulations.
The legislator from the Gerindra Faction emphasized that the implementation of human rights-based governance by large-scale corporations like Freeport is a strategic step worthy of emulation. According to him, Freeport's success proves that business profitability and national economic contributions can still go hand in hand with respect for humanity.
Furthermore, Sugiat hopes that the implementation of these human rights-friendly business principles is not merely seen as fulfilling administrative obligations, but is adopted as a work culture by other corporations in Indonesia. This is considered vital to creating a healthy, ethical, and sustainable investment climate in the country.
