In the modern business landscape, Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives can no longer stand alone as internal programs. Communication practitioners are now required to position communication as the primary infrastructure that unites all business elements to create a tangible impact for stakeholders.
Senior Manager of Corporate Secretary at PT Pelabuhan Tanjung Priok (PTP Nonpetikemas), Fiona Sari Utami, at the 5th Indonesia DEI & ESG Awards (IDEAS) 2026, emphasized that communication must function as a bridge of collaboration. According to her, business cannot be viewed merely as operational activity, but as an ecosystem connecting supply chains, food security, and the surrounding community.
Fiona explained that in the ESG aspect, transparency is a crucial element for building public trust in environmental initiatives and corporate governance. Meanwhile, DEI is positioned as an organizational capability to respond to market complexities. Homogeneous organizations will struggle to survive, making diversity an absolute requirement in facing the dynamics of a constantly changing business environment.
Furthermore, she emphasized that communication responsibility should not be borne solely by the Public Relations division. Every employee in the company must act as a communication agent, bringing ESG and DEI narratives into their respective communities and social networks.
In closing, the effectiveness of this strategy is not measured by the volume of media coverage or the annual reports produced. Instead, a company's success is measured by its ability to tell the story of a transformation process that has a direct impact on the national economy and the sustainability of the ecosystem in which the company operates.
