Global tech giant Microsoft has just announced a massive efficiency policy resulting in a workforce reduction of 4,800 employees. This strategic step includes a fundamental overhaul of Xbox's business structure, making it one of the company's most significant waves of layoffs this year.

According to management's announcement on Monday (7/6/2026), the policy affects approximately 2% of Microsoft's total global workforce. The gaming sector is the focal point of the restructuring, accounting for around 3,200 affected positions. The company indicated that this operational realignment will continue through fiscal year 2027 under the direction of new Xbox CEO, Asha Sharma.

Microsoft's Chief People Officer, Amy Coleman, stated that this difficult decision was made in response to the accelerated pace of change in the highly dynamic technology industry. Echoing that statement, Asha Sharma emphasized that restructuring the gaming division is a crucial step to reorganize the company's portfolio, despite the year-long transition process posing significant operational challenges.

In addition to cutting staff, Microsoft decided to divest its ownership of four game development studios. Compulsion Games and Double Fine Productions have transformed into independent entities, while Ninja Theory and Undead Labs have transitioned under the management of new investors. This decision drastically reshapes Xbox's game developer portfolio landscape.

Prior to these layoffs, Microsoft had actually undertaken mitigation efforts through a voluntary buyout program for U.S. employees in April. Although more than a third of eligible employees took the offer, management still saw the need for further position eliminations to stabilize business conditions amid current intense tech competition.
