The 2026 Extraordinary Provincial Sports Congress (Musorprovlub) of KONI Southwest Papua was officially held at the Rylich Panorama Hotel, Sorong City, on Wednesday (29/7/2026). This momentum serves as an important milestone for organizing sports organizations in Indonesia's youngest province to produce high-achieving athletes from national to international levels.

The General Chair of Central KONI, Marciano Norman, who attended the forum in person, invited all sports stakeholders in Southwest Papua to unite in building a professional organization. He explained that the main agenda of this congress is to elect the new Chairperson of KONI Southwest Papua, focusing support on a single candidate who is one of the region's best sons.

Marciano emphasized that the main essence of KONI management is not a struggle for power, but rather the continuity of athlete development programs. The former Chief of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) is optimistic that Southwest Papua harbors immense sports talent potential capable of competing on the global stage. He hopes that in the future, new champions will emerge from this region in the SEA Games, Asian Games, and the Olympics.

In line with this vision, the Acting Governor of Southwest Papua, Elisa Kambu, requested that the congress serve as a unifying forum rather than a venue for unproductive debates. According to Elisa, the main focus of all parties should be on how to encourage local youth to achieve golden milestones and bring honor to the nation on the international sports stage.

Elisa also highlighted the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration in advancing the sports sector. Given regional budget limitations, she emphasized that developing elite sports cannot rely solely on the government, but requires strategic partnerships with the private sector and the community to achieve the envisioned performance goals.
