President Prabowo Subianto received a state visit from the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Tuesday, July 7, 2026. This bilateral meeting became a crucial momentum for both countries to strengthen their strategic partnership, especially in facing the dynamics of the global energy market affected by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
In a joint press statement, President Prabowo revealed that both countries agreed to explore the potential for exchanging nuclear energy technology as well as developing solar power plants. This step was taken as a concrete effort by Indonesia and India to strengthen their respective national energy security through cross-border collaboration.
In addition to the energy sector, the meeting agenda also included strengthening cooperation in the health sector, focused on increasing the professional capacity of medical personnel. As two democratic countries with large populations, Prabowo emphasized that the synergy between Jakarta and New Delhi will make a significant contribution to world peace, as well as championing the aspirations of Global South countries on the international stage.
Regarding global security issues, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to keeping the Indo-Pacific region free, open, and upholding international law, while respecting ASEAN centrality. Concerning the conflict in the Middle East, both Prabowo and Modi agreed to support diplomatic channels and a two-state solution to achieve long-term peace for Palestine.
This high-level meeting resulted in 16 memorandums of understanding (MoUs) covering a broad spectrum of cooperation, ranging from defense, space technology—through a partnership between BRIN and the Indian Space Research Organisation—to the cultural sector. PM Modi's three-day visit is planned to continue to Yogyakarta to visit the Prambanan Temple area as part of a mission to strengthen people-to-people diplomatic relations.
