The Bekasi Regency Government has utilized the momentum of the School Orientation Period (MPLS) to equip new students with a strong understanding of digital literacy. This step was taken to encourage students to utilize information technology to support their academic achievements while countering the negative impacts of the cyber world.
One of these educational sessions was held by the Bekasi Regency Communication, Informatics, Cryptography, and Statistics Department (Diskominfosantik) at SMP Plus El-Wafa, Kedungwaringin District, on Wednesday (15/7/2026). On this occasion, students were encouraged to be more critical in filtering information amidst the rapid flow of digitalization.
The Head of the Public Information and Communication Provision Team of Diskominfosantik Bekasi Regency, Iwan Eli Setiawan, emphasized the importance of maintaining study focus amidst various social media distractions. According to him, although it offers many benefits, social media can become a boomerang if not approached wisely.
In addition to the utilization of technology, cyberbullying prevention materials were a major highlight. The local government is committed to instilling a culture of mutual respect in the digital space to build ethical student character, both in the school environment and on social media.
Regarding the development of cutting-edge technology such as artificial intelligence (AI), Iwan urged students to use it as a means to understand the learning process, not just as a shortcut to complete assignments. He reminded them that any information obtained from AI still requires confirmation and guidance from teachers so that students' academic understanding remains on track.
The school welcomed the regency government's initiative positively. Fitriawati, one of the educators at SMP Plus El-Wafa, assessed that digital literacy briefing is highly relevant to the reality faced by today's young generation, serving as a shield against the bad influences of the internet.
