Indonesia's telecommunications sector is now tightening the security system for prepaid SIM card registration by adopting biometric technology. This step requires users to verify their identity through facial scanning or face recognition, as an effort to mitigate data misuse and increase the validity of customer identities.
To facilitate this policy, each cellular operator has provided registration channels that can be accessed independently by customers. One example is Telkomsel, which provides a dedicated portal at tsel.id/registrasi for users who wish to update their data from home without having to visit a physical store.
The self-registration procedure begins by entering the active phone number to be registered, followed by verification of a One-Time Password (OTP) code sent to the user's device. Once access is verified, customers must enter their National Identity Number (NIK) from their ID card and complete a selfie (selfie) process as a form of biometric validation.
The system will process the data automatically and provide confirmation of success via short message service (SMS). Although self-service is the primary option, customers who encounter technical difficulties still have the alternative to register in person at their respective operator's official service center.
