The slopes of Mount Merbabu in Warangan Hamlet, Magelang, vibrated once again with the rhythm of tradition as the Five Mountains Community opened the silver jubilee of the 25th Five Mountains Festival on July 10, 2026. Beginning with a tree-planting ritual as a symbol of nature conservation, this festival reaffirms its existence as a space of expression for peasant artists who have consistently nurtured cultural roots for a quarter of a century.
The theme "Makin Goblok Bareng" (Getting Foolish Together) adopted this year has caught the public's attention. Although it sounds provocative, this narrative is a form of spiritual challenge to human ambition in the fast-paced information age. According to local art activists, the term is a reflection on the current state of the world, as well as an invitation to shed intellectual pride in order to achieve harmony with one another and the universe.
The creativity of the hamlet residents was evident through various art installations utilizing natural materials, such as straw, bamboo, and corn cobs. The presence of a giant installation of Punakawan characters in the stage area became a symbol of the community's philosophical message: that behind humor and simplicity lies a deep contemplation of the chaos of modern civilization.
The festival, which runs until July 12, 2026, successfully gathered 85 art groups with more than 1,200 artists from various parts of the country.
