The Can Tho City Tax Department is currently implementing a strategic initiative to review, classify, and standardize tax identification number (TIN) data. This step is being taken as an effort to clean up the administration of thousands of business entities that have ceased operations or relocated without completing official closure procedures.
This backlog of data is not merely an administrative issue. Authorities highlighted serious potential risks, such as the exploitation of legal loopholes for illegal electronic invoicing, to identity theft where citizens' personal data is used to register business entities without the owners' knowledge. This cleanup is expected to close the gap for such fraudulent practices while providing legal protection for taxpayers.
As of late March 2026, a total of 27,435 records in Can Tho required data cleaning. This figure consists of 14,589 dissolved businesses and 12,846 entities that are no longer active at their registered locations. To date, the local tax authorities have successfully classified and verified 8,322 taxpayers as part of the campaign targeting completion by December 2026.
Mrs. Nguyen Ngoc Nhu Thuy, Head of Business Management and Support Department No. 3, admitted that this process is indeed challenging due to the complexity of verification and the need for cross-agency coordination. Nevertheless, the tax authority is committed to accelerating digital transformation to ensure the integrity of taxpayer data is maintained.
Tax authorities urge all businesses and home-based business owners to immediately conduct self-checks regarding the legal status of their businesses. Taxpayers who are proactive in correcting their data will be provided with full assistance by tax officers to ensure their rights remain protected in the future.
