Agricultural pests remain a terrifying scourge for rice farmers striving to maintain land productivity. To address this issue, a research team from the State Polytechnic of Jember (Polije) initiated the implementation of an eco-friendly technology called Solar Cell Automatic Trapping in the paddy fields of Rambipuji Village, Jember Regency, East Java.

This cutting-edge innovation is designed as an integrated pest management system combining three protective functions into a single device. The tool utilizes ultraviolet (UV) light paired with a suction fan to trap brown planthoppers. Meanwhile, to deter rodent attacks, the system emits ultrasonic waves at frequencies of 20 to 50 kilohertz, which disrupt the rodents' nervous systems without disturbing nearby humans.

Additionally, threats from rice-eating bird flocks such as munias and sparrows are countered using an audio player reproducing the sounds of eagles as natural predators. This fully automated system is powered entirely by clean energy from a 50 Watt-peak (Wp) solar panel connected to a 100 Ah battery storage unit, allowing the device to operate independently around the clock without relying on conventional electricity.

Installed on the land of the Makmur Farmers Group since late August 2025, the device is supported by a 1.5-meter iron frame so that it sits ideally about 50 centimeters above the rice canopy. This height is considered optimal to maximize the reach of the insect-attracting light. The use of a light-dependent resistor (LDR) sensor ensures the UV light turns on automatically only at night, while power charging occurs effectively during the day.

Based on regular monitoring results, this innovation has proven effective in significantly suppressing pest populations while reducing farmers' reliance on chemical pesticides. The successful implementation of this precision agricultural technology is expected to serve as a model for other rice-producing hubs in achieving sustainable, ecosystem-friendly national food security.
