The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has officially urged the public and tourists to stay away from the hazard area surrounding Mount Anak Krakatau. This prohibition was implemented after the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources raised the volcano's activity status from Level II (Waspada) to Level III (Siaga) starting July 2, 2026.
Head of the Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center at BNPB, Abdul Muhari, emphasized that no activities are permitted within a three-kilometer radius from the eruption center. This mitigation step was taken in response to potential threats of pyroclastic flows, lava, and volcanic material ejecta that could endanger public safety in the Sunda Strait region.
Despite the heightened status, authorities confirmed that maritime transportation, particularly ferry crossings between Banten and Lampung, continues to operate normally. The shipping lanes are declared to be outside the designated disaster-prone zone set by geologists.
Meanwhile, the Geological Agency dismissed viral video clips on social media claiming a major eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau. Acting Head of the Geological Agency, Lana Saria, confirmed that the videos are fake news. Based on monitoring data, the volcano only experienced two minor eruptions with 200-meter-high ash plumes on July 2 and 3.
The government urges the public to remain calm and rely solely on official information channels, such as MAGMA Indonesia or the Geological Agency's official website, to monitor the latest developments. Residents are also advised not to be easily provoked by unverified digital content.
