In an effort to strengthen the national competitiveness of nuclear technology research, researchers from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) participated in intensive training on X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) techniques. The event, titled Training Workshop on Good Practices in X-Ray Fluorescence, was organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Seibersdorf, Austria, in early June 2026.

A representative from BRIN's Research Center for Nuclear Beam Analysis Technology, Feni Fernita Nurhaini, served as the Indonesian delegate in the two-week training. The program involved experts and practitioners from various IAEA member states, with a primary focus on material characterization, quality control, and nuclear technology applications for the industrial and environmental sectors.

During the training at the IAEA's flagship laboratory (NSIL), participants were granted access to explore advanced instrumentation, such as Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) for multi-element analysis, as well as high spatial resolution micro-XRF techniques. The training covered the entire analytical cycle, from sample preparation and experimental processes to accurate spectral data interpretation.

Feni expressed that direct interaction with international experts such as Andreas Karydas and Alessandro Migliori provided new perspectives for research development back home. Beyond enriching theoretical aspects, the training also facilitated a global collaboration network with researchers from various countries, ranging from Argentina to Bangladesh.

Moving forward, the knowledge gained is expected to be implemented to enhance the accuracy of environmental sample analysis at BRIN laboratories. Key focus areas include optimizing the Epsilon 5 instrument, validating calibration methods, and knowledge transfer to peers to strengthen human resource capabilities in the national nuclear technology sector.
