The management of the Ijen Crater Natural Tourism Park (TWA) is preparing to launch a new safety facility in the form of an emergency button or panic button placed right at the rim of the Ijen Crater. This technological device is specifically designed to facilitate communication between tourists and duty officers at the Pal Tuding post, especially during critical situations.
Head of BKSDA Region V Banyuwangi, Dwi Putro Sugiarto, explained that the main infrastructure has been installed and is currently in the technical finalization stage. "The device is already installed on site; we are processing its operation so it can be immediately used by hikers before the end of this month," he stated on Wednesday (7/8/2026).
This system relies on a satellite-based internet connection, ensuring communication remains stable even though the crater peak location is beyond the reach of conventional cellular networks. In addition to voice features, the device is also equipped with a camera capable of sending user visuals directly to the officers' monitoring room at the hiking entrance. This is guaranteed to greatly assist tourists who may not carry personal communication devices during their climb.
More than just an emergency button for reporting accidents, this device is also equipped with an integrated loudspeaker. This facility serves as a medium for delivering crucial information to visitors, such as early warnings of increased toxic gas activity, advisories to stay away from the crater rim, and announcements regarding visiting hours limits.
To protect the facility from irresponsible individuals, the management is committed to deploying supervisory officers around the location. This step is one of BKSDA's top priorities to improve visitor safety standards at the popular natural tourism destination.
