China is progressively accelerating its pace in the development of sixth-generation (6G) cellular technology, driven by full ambition to achieve commercialization by 2030. This technology does not merely offer an increase in data transmission speed up to 1 terabit per second—or 100 times faster than current 5G—but is positioned as vital digital infrastructure or a 'nerve center' for the future digital economy.
To date, China leads the global innovation race, holding approximately 40% of the world's core 6G patents. Furthermore, the country has completed testing on over 300 key technologies. The primary focus of development currently lies in the deep integration between artificial intelligence (AI) technology and cellular networks, a strategy believed to become the main driving force for smart manufacturing, transportation, and AI agent-based communications.
According to Academician Zhang Ping of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, global 6G R&D is entering a crucial stage, particularly in verification and standardization aspects. Unlike previous generations that were limited to connectivity between humans or devices, 6G is projected to build an integrated information network linking humans, machines, objects, and AI agents seamlessly across various domains—ranging from land, air, and space to oceans.
To enhance competitiveness, China is currently implementing an 'AI+6G' collaborative development model. This initiative involves close coordination among industry sectors, research institutions, and academia. This move is accompanied by increased active participation in formulating international standards and strengthening intellectual property protection to secure China's dominant role in the future global tech landscape.
