The region of North Halmahera, North Maluku, was jolted by a magnitude 6.2 earthquake on Friday (3/7/2026) morning. The geological event, which occurred precisely at 11:31 WIT, reportedly had its epicenter at a depth of 100 kilometers, categorizing it as an intermediate-depth earthquake.
According to data from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake's epicenter was located at sea, approximately 58 kilometers southwest of Doi Island. Although the epicenter was far offshore, the tremors were felt quite broadly, reaching Ternate, Tidore, Sanana, Morotai, and parts of Gorontalo.
Analysis of shaking intensity showed variations across different areas. Residents in North Halmahera felt tremors at III-IV MMI scale, causing light indoor objects to sway. Meanwhile, in regions such as Ternate and East Bolaang Mongondow, the intensity was recorded at III MMI, where tremors felt like a heavy vehicle passing by.
To date, local authorities have confirmed no reports of casualties or significant infrastructure damage. BMKG explicitly stated that this earthquake has no potential to trigger a tsunami along the coasts near the epicenter.
BMKG urges residents in affected areas to remain calm and not be misled by unverified information. Citizens are advised to monitor official information channels and stay alert for potential aftershocks, while verifying the structural safety of their homes before engaging in indoor activities.
