Volcanic activity at Mount Semeru in East Java has increased again. The highest mountain on Java Island was reported to have erupted on Tuesday morning (7/14/2026) at 06:51 WIB, spewing a volcanic ash column 1,200 meters above its peak.
The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) reported that the observed ash column was white to gray with thick intensity, leaning towards the east and northeast. This eruption was recorded on the seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 19 mm and an eruption earthquake duration of approximately 1 minute and 43 seconds.
Currently, Mount Semeru remains at Level III (Alert) status. As a safety precaution, PVMBG urges the public and tourists to avoid any activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan within a 13-kilometer radius from the eruption center.
In addition, residents are prohibited from carrying out activities within 500 meters of the riverbanks along Besuk Kobokan. This restriction is implemented to avoid the potential danger of expanding pyroclastic flows and cold lahar flows that could reach up to 17 kilometers from the mountain peak.
