Mount Semeru, located on the border of Lumajang and Malang regencies in East Java, was reported to have erupted again on Thursday (2/7/2026). The volcanic event was accompanied by pyroclastic flows reaching a distance of 4 kilometers from the summit.
According to an official report from Mount Semeru Observation Post officer Liswanto, the eruption occurred precisely at 16:37 WIB. The eruption column was observed reaching a height of 1,500 meters above the peak, equivalent to 5,176 meters above sea level. Moderate-intensity volcanic ash was observed drifting toward the southeast.
This eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and lasted for approximately 6 minutes and 40 seconds. As of the time of the report, volcanic activity continues to be observed, with pyroclastic flows heading toward the Besuk Kobokan sector.
Currently, Mount Semeru remains at Level III (Alert) status. Authorities strictly prohibit any activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan within a 13-kilometer radius from the eruption center. Additionally, activities within a 5-kilometer radius from the peak are forbidden to prevent injuries from incandescent rock projectiles.
Residents living around valleys or river basins originating from Mount Semeru, such as Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat, are urged to increase vigilance against potential lava avalanches and lahar flows. Authorities continue to monitor the situation to ensure the safety of residents in affected areas.
