Mount Semeru, located in Lumajang Regency, East Java, showed significant volcanic activity again on Friday (3/7/2026) morning. The eruption recorded at 07:29 WIB spewed an ash column 1,100 meters above the summit, or approximately 4,776 meters above sea level.
Based on visual observations, the generated ash column was white to gray with moderate intensity. The dispersion of volcanic material was observed leaning toward the southern sector. As of this report, volcano observers stated that the eruption is still ongoing, indicating that volcanic conditions at the highest peak on Java Island remain highly dynamic.
Responding to the situation, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) immediately issued safety protocols for the public and climbers. A primary ban was implemented in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan, where the public is prohibited from conducting any activities within a 13-kilometer radius from the eruption center.
Additionally, relevant authorities emphasized a prohibition of activities within a 5-kilometer radius from the active crater to avoid the danger of incandescent rock projectiles. The public is also urged to remain vigilant against the threats of pyroclastic flows, lava flows, and rain-triggered lahars, especially residents living near river channels originating from Mount Semeru.
