These findings are reinforced by a study in Communications Psychology showing that intense short-video viewing reduces the synchronization of neural activity in brain regions controlling attention. Instead of processing knowledge deeply, the brain becomes accustomed to responding shallowly to new stimuli, thereby impairing the ability to maintain long-term goals and plans.
However, scientists have found an effective antidote: physical activity. Data indicates that individuals who exercise regularly have better blood flow efficiency in the prefrontal cortex—a brain region crucial for cognitive control. Exercise stimulates the production of the BDNF protein, which supports nerve cell health, and can even increase the volume of the hippocampus, which plays a vital role in memory formation.
Although this research is observational, experts suggest the importance of balancing digital content consumption with physical activity. Following the WHO recommendation of 150-300 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week can be a concrete step.
