The holding of the 2026 Ponorogo Regency Championship (Kejurkab) serves as a strategic momentum for regional sports achievement development. Daily Chairman of KONI Ponorogo, Sumani, expressed high optimism seeing the dominance of young athletes, especially students, who dominated the competition. The presence of these young athletes is considered a crucial asset to strengthen the Ponorogo contingent on a higher stage.
The event, which runs from July 7 to 29, 2026, features 16 sports branches with the main focus on scouting talented prospective athletes. Considering that the maximum age limit for Porprov athletes is 23 years, the participation of students in this event serves as an initial step of thorough preparation before being deployed to the X East Java Porprov in Surabaya next year.
An ambitious target has been set by KONI Ponorogo to improve upon its achievements at the IX East Java Porprov 2025 in Greater Malang, where the Ponorogo contingent brought home 9 gold, 11 silver, and 18 bronze medals, ranking 26th. The committee is working hard so that the region's standing can move up through intensive coaching stemming from the selections made in this Kejurkab.
To date, martial arts disciplines such as jujitsu and pencak silat remain the backbone of medal gains for Ponorogo. However, Sumani emphasized that medal potential is also wide open in other branches such as open water diving, rock climbing, athletics, as well as aerosports like paragliding and hang gliding. Through an integrated development system, KONI is optimistic that the medal target will be more competitive at the upcoming provincial event.
